A Jones County man was killed after his compact car was hit by a southbound Amtrak Crescent train on Wednesday.

Charles Andrew Sumrall, 20, was pronounced dead at the scene, Forrest County Coroner Butch Benedict said.

Traveling westbound on Eastabuchie Road, Sumrall tried to cross the railroad tracks when his car was struck by the passenger train. Authorities say the train pushed the car nearly a quarter mile down the track before coming to a stop.

Authorities are investigating the incident, Forrest County Sheriff’s investigator David Jarrell said.

The intersection is marked, but there is no crossing gate.

The collision is the second at the intersection this year. On March 22, a northbound freight train collided with a car carrying a 65-year-old Forrest County man, who was hospitalized for his injuries.
