Dr. Ted Alexander is being recognized tonight by WLOX in Biloxi for his work in originating and raising funds for Safe Harbor, a summer camp program for students in school districts affected by Hurricane Katrina.
More than 2,600 children attended the Safe Harbor camps in eight locations in the Picayune, Pearl River County, Poplarville and Bay St. Louis/Waveland school districts. Alexander helped raise more than $600,000 for the program from foundations, corporations and private individuals around the nation. Plans are to extend the effort as an after school program, if financing can be found.
Alexander will be recognized as a “South Mississippi Hero” for his efforts with Safe Harbor during WLOX’s 10 p.m. news segment.
