George Co. woman set to serve 15 years in prison for death of husband
A George County woman will serve 15 years in prison after being found guilty of manslaughter in the 2003 shooting death of her husband.
Patricia Simpson, 56, fainted and fell limp to the floor when Judge Dale Harkey found her guilty in George County Circuit Court on Friday.
Harkey sentenced Simpson to 20 years with 15 served and five years post-release supervision.
Simpson was charged in 2004 with shooting her husband, Don Simpson, who died of a gunshot wound on Dec. 22, 2003.
The shooting death was originally regarded as an accident. But prosecutors said further investigation resulted in a murder charge.
Defense attorney Calvin Taylor requested a bench trial for his client.
District Attorney Tony Lawrence said it appears the judge listened to the testimony of expert witnesses and decided Patricia Simpson was guilty of manslaughter.
