Two Pascagoula residents died this past weekend when they were struck by a car as they walked along Interstate 10, authorities said.

DeLisha Chriswell, 23, and D’Wayne Vaughn, 27, were pronounced dead at the scene of Sunday’s accident, said Highway Patrol spokesman Sgt. Joe Gazzo.

Gazzo said the driver of the car, who was not injured, stopped after hitting the pedestrians. Charges were not filed although the accident remains under investigation, he said.

The car was traveling westbound in the left lane away from the emergency lane, which runs along the right side of the highway and is often used by drivers who have car trouble.

Gazzo said the victims’ car was parked on the side of the interstate a few hundred yards from where the accident happened. Gazzo said he could not say why the victims were walking on the interstate.

Jackson County Coroner Vicki Broadus said the victims died from “massive head wounds and internal injuries.”
