Celebrating parents who are involved

With so many stories infiltrating the news about abuse at the hands of parents it’s important to remember that the vast majority parents put forth their best effort in rearing their children.
A quick look at the headlines in many newspapers and on social media newsfeeds will display a plethora of stories where children are abused, neglected or left in situations where they ultimately come to harm.
Fortunately parents who care for their children are more common than those who decide that drugs or some other illegal action is more important than their progeny.
Seven adults who fit the bill of being exceptional parents were recognized at Tuesday’s Picayune School District Board of Trustees meeting.
Each one was described as being dedicated not only to their own child, but also concerned about the wellbeing of every student that attends the school.
Not every parent has the time to devote so much of their lives to their child’s school in an effort to make it a better place to learn and grow. But to those who stand above the rest, it’s great to see the district has a program to recognize them for their volunteerism.
They not only create a better environment at the schools, but will ultimately inspire young people, and possibly other parents, to become volunteers themselves.
Positive influences, especially for young children, are essential.
So let’s celebrate those parents who were recognized earlier this week.
If you see them around town, take a second to thank them for the time they devote not just to the school, but to all the children who attend class there.
