On any given day, there’s a bevy of activity at the Senior Center of South Pearl River County.
In one area of the center, seniors showcase their vocal talents during karaoke or some days, many can be found kicking up their heels during a line dancing class.
However, those aren’t the only stimulating activities offered. There are also quilters, painters and those who sew.
About a year ago, MSU Extension Agent Dawn Vosbein started the center’s sewing group.
“With Extension, we do whatever is needed to volunteer in our community,” she said. “I also started teaching the exercise class here.”
Vosbein, who has sewn all of her life, said she recently returned to the craft. After 2005’s Hurricane Katrina she lost much of her handiwork.
The group currently has two members and Vosbein looks through Pinterest searching for new patterns and techniques.
“We try to make something that can be done within two hours,” Vosbein said. “They like to get together and sew and also sew at home.”
Recently, seniors made a bowl holder, which can be placed around a soup bowl and microwaved, Vosbein said. They can be made to fit any size of cookware. They learned how to make shredded quilts, cosmetic bags, table runners and a bag to hold their leftover cuttings.
They also make hats for cancer patients, she added.
“Anytime you can teach them to learn new stuff, it helps them,” Vosbein said. “I want to take some of that and teach it to their grandkids.”
Participants bring their own sewing machine, tools and sometimes materials such as batting and thread, Vosbein said.
The group meets once a month on a Tuesday from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the senior center located at 45 El Patch Parkway in Picayune.
Contact staff at 601-798-9892 and for up-to-date information visit the center’s Facebook and Twitter accounts.
