Political rally to be held this Saturday

This fall, elections will be held in Pearl River County and this Saturday, residents will be afforded the opportunity to hear candidates speak and ask questions at the Hillside Political Rally.
Three-years ago, Catherine “Cat” Tucker said she realized voter turnout in the county was low.
“There is usually about a 30 percent voter turnout rate in Pearl River County,” Tucker said. “Some people want to complain about elected officials, but come election time they don’t pay attention to who’s running or vote.”
Tucker said she tired of the disinterest and decided to organize a rally in order to give both candidates and residents the opportunity to speak.
“The rally is open to anyone who is running in the election,” Tucker said. “This rally is not being held to promote any particular candidate.”
Speakers include Lt. Governor candidate Alisha Nelson McElhenney and Public Service Commissioner candidate Senator Tony Smith.
Chancery Clerk candidate Melinda Bowman and Justice Court Judge North candidates Judge James Breland and Michael Brown will also speak.
Pearl River County Sheriff candidates John Herring, Sheriff David Allison and Charlie Fazende will be attending the rally as well.
District III Supervisor candidate Hudson Holliday and Constable North candidate Danny Slade will also speak.
Other speakers include Circuit Clerk candidates Sian Fazende, Aprel Purvis, Darrel Darden and Nance Fitzpatrick Stokes; and District 47 Senate candidates Mike Tyson and Joseph M. “Mike “Seymour.
The rally will be held at the Hillsdale Clubhouse in Lumberton and will begin promptly at 10 a.m. Tucker said. The event is free and open to the public, however Tucker asks that attendees not be late.
Lunch will be served and the event will feature a performance by Lumberton native Michael Simeon, who was a finalist on the television show “American Idol.”
“The whole idea is for people to get a good look at these politicians,” Tucker said. “In the past, we’ve usually had about 200 people attend. This year, we already have 100 confirmed.”
Any candidates who wish to speak at the rally may contact Tucker. However, she cannot guarantee a spot and will work with them if possible.
The Hillsdale Clubhouse is located at 75 Rault Dr. in Lumberton. For more information, contact Tucker or Holly Bozanic at 601-796-5773.
