This weekend the Pearl River County Arts League will host its 41st annual art show.
According to previous Item coverage, the league includes 75 local and practicing artists who create their work utilizing various techniques, including oils, acrylics, watercolors, pastels, mixed media, woodcarving, pottery and photography.
Along with the league’s members, this show will feature the talents of artists of all ages, PRCAL publicity chairman Gail Sheasby said.
There will be numerous displays of art including two-dimensional wall art, three-dimensional pottery, woodcarvings and ceramics; and photography, Sheasby said.
There will be a section for children and senior art, Sheasby said. Participating seniors take art lessons and attend workshops at the Senior Center of South Pearl River County in Picayune.
The main judge for the weekend’s festivities is Carriere artist, Christine Bandera, Sheasby said.
According to a PRCAL release, Bandera is a graduate of Missouri State University and recently retired from teaching Talented Art at Northshore High School in Slidell, Louisiana. Bandera works with watercolors, oil, ceramics, photography and jewelry, the release states. She is an award winner in both Louisiana and Mississippi. Her work can be found in private homes, offices and the 22nd Judicial District Courthouse in Covington, Louisiana.
Although admission to this weekend’s event is free, Sheasby said the show serves as one of the group’s main fundraising events each year. Each artist pays a fee to enter the show.
There will also be a raffle for the group’s Margaret Dawsey Art Scholarship, which is open to all students enrolled in a Mississippi college who are studying art-related subjects, Sheasby said.
The group is also saving money to pay for a permanent location, Sheasby said.
“Arts and culture are important for the people and children of this community,” Sheasby said. “When we get a home, we will be able to offer art lessons and workshops for the community.”
Each year the show is held at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Picayune, which is located at 408 Carroll St.
The free show will be open to the public on Saturday, April 18 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, April 19 from noon to 4 p.m.
The group meets the first Tuesday of the month at Infused, which is located at 209 W. Canal St., Picayune.
Membership in PRCAL costs $25 per year, Sheasby said.
