A look back on 2013 legislative action

Starting at noon on Tuesday, the Mississippi Legislature will convene in Jackson for its regular session for 2014. With the start of the session about to begin in the New Year, here is a look back at the 2013 session.

In 2013, there were 459 bills that passed through both the state House of Representatives and state Senate. Of those 459 bills, Gov. Phil Bryant signed 416 into law.

State Rep. Mark Formby, who represents Pearl River County, authored or co-authored 76 house bills. Twelve of those bills passed both houses of the State Legislature and were signed into law by the governor.

State Rep. Herb Frierson, who also represents Pearl River County, authored or co-authored 88 bills and 57 passed both houses and were signed by the governor.

Fifty-one of the bills Frierson authored or co-authored were appropriations bills, which is the provision of funds for state agencies during the current fiscal year.

State Sen. Angela Burks Hill authored or co-authored 41 bills in the 2013 legislative session. Eleven of the bills passed both houses of the legislature and were signed into law by the governor. Two of the bills were for the appropriation of funds for the Mississippi Development Authority and for the State Gaming Commission.

State Sen. Tony Smith authored or co-authored 37 bills. Eight of the bills passed both houses and were signed into law by the governor.
