It’s easy to set goals. In fact, that’s the easiest part when it comes to guiding our dreams to fruition.

As we jot down a list of all the things we’d like to see happen in the next year, perhaps we’re imagining the finest version of ourselves doing everything we love best, or maybe just the things we envy the most.

Once the daydreaming is done, what do we do to achieve those goals?

No, seriously. What do we do?

If you’re anything like me, your list of ambitions has been carefully crafted since grade school — the first time a guest speaker tried to motivate you using the words of Walt Disney, “If you can dream it, you can do it” — and the list of ambitions has been growing exponentially ever since.

Well, Walt, would you care to elaborate a little? I could use some guidance and my imagination is very active.

I’m kidding. Sort of.

What I know, without a doubt, is that life is about the process it takes to make progress and what we glean from the experience. Working towards our goals, however challenging, is the fun part (even though checking them off the list is fun too)!

Ultimately, you know yourself best. What’s within your capability? To accomplish a goal, it may require making big changes and starting new habits, which can be difficult. Stay consistent and it is possible.

In order to get started, come up with a game plan — something that’s not overwhelming. Start small, track your goals and don’t procrastinate. Tell a friend what you’re up to so you’ll be held accountable. Stay determined and believe in yourself. Doubt is the opposite of determination and will prevent you from moving forward.

For a little extra motivation, remember the wise words of Lao Tzu, “The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” If you want to get there, you have to get going.
