Bayli Cucinello pitched a complete-game two-hitter to lead the PRC Lady Devils softball team to a 4-1 win over highly-ranked D’Iberville on Thursday at D’Iberville.
Cucinello struck out eight and did not walk a batter in improving her pitching record to 4-0.
Addison Davis got the Lady Devils on the board in the top of the first with an RBI-groundout to score fellow freshman Alexa Vaughn, who led off the game with a walk. Later in the game, Davis had an RBI-double to make the score 2-0. The Devils scored their last two runs in the top of the fifth. A sacrifice bunt by Shelbie McCracking moved a runner to second base with two outs, and Carley Mataya followed with a clutch RBI-single. The next batter, Cami Lee, followed with a single, and Mataya was able to come all the way around to score on a fielding error by the Lady Warriors.
D’Iberville broke up the shutout with an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh.
“Bayli was brilliant tonight,” said PRC Coach Tony LaBella. “We needed a good game after how poorly we played on Monday (a 7-0 loss at Poplarville). We had two really solid practices heading into the D’Iberville game, and I was really proud of the girls’ effort. They were much more focused and supportive of one another.”
The Lady Devils (6-2-1) have a few more games before starting district play against Hattiesburg High on March 11 and 13. The Lady Devils have won district titles in nine of the last 11 seasons, including the last three.
