A modification was made to Picayune School District’s plan to reopen schools and bring students back to class, but the modification only pertains to mask use.
The district’s plan to return to school was initially released on July 14, in which the district provided guidance for parents as they prepare to send their children back to class on Aug. 6.
In the original plan masks for students were optional, but strongly suggested while on the bus and while traversing the campus to reach classes.
The modified plan released Monday morning changes the mask policy to mandate the use of face masks while riding a bus, while in common areas or when teachers or administrators deem it necessary. The plan still encourages parents to provide a means of transportation other than school buses to their children when possible.
The policy still restricts the use of masks that contain inappropriate, suggestive or profane wording/material or images.
The option for virtual or distance learning for students was not modified in this revised policy. Students attending the Picayune School District will only have access to virtual or distance learning if they can provide proof from a “qualified medical provider” that an illness precludes their physical attendance in class. If a student can not provide proof of such a medical diagnosis, then that student is expected to attend class in person.
The only time virtual or distance learning, to include paper packets, will be universally available is if the school is closed as part of a mandate from the governor or if an outbreak occurs in a class or campus and the Mississippi Department of Health determines the class or campus should close.
