MHP to hold Fourth of July enforcement period

Troopers with the Mississippi Highway Patrol will be conducting a holiday enforcement period called Drive Right Mississippi starting at 12:01 a.m. on Friday.
According to a release from MHP Capt. Johnny Poulos, the enforcement period will include saturation patrols and checkpoints to deter instances of distracted driving, DUIs, seatbelt use and other unsafe driving habits. Troopers will also be looking for instances of motorist not abiding by the left hand lane law, where motorists are mandated by law to keep slower traffic in the right lane.
The enforcement period will last until midnight Sunday, July 5.
Last year during the Fourth of July holiday period, troopers worked 63 motor vehicle collisions that involved one fatality, and effected 43 arrests for DUI.
