The state of Mississippi now has 9,674 cases of COVID-19 of which 435 deaths were attributed, according to statistics from Mississippi State Department of Health. Within Pearl River County, 24 people of 190 cases have died as a result of the virus.
Six deaths within Pearl River County involved patients at long term care facilities in Pearl River County.
Issaquena County is still the only county in this state without a reported case of the virus.
As of May 10, 4,608 of the statewide cases were reported in African American residents, resulting in 230 deaths. The number of white residents reporting cases totaled 2,640, of which 176 deaths were reported. The remaining cases were attributed to other nationalities, MSDH reports.
Underlying conditions have been attributed to difficulties with a COVID-19 case. The worst of which was hypertension, where 134 deaths involved African American residents and 97 involved white residents. Other risk factors included cardiovascular disease, diabetes, obesity, lung disease or renal disease. In all of those categories, more black than white people died except in the categories of neurologic conditions and liver disease.
According to statistics on the MSDH website, deaths categorized in age groups entail: one death in the 18-29 age group; eight deaths in the 30 to 39 age group; 15 deaths in the 40-49 age group; 27 deaths in the 50-59 age group; 101 deaths in the 60-69 age group; 125 deaths in the 70-79 age group; 97 deaths in the 80-89 age group and 61 deaths in the 90 and older age group.
Of the total cases reported, 40.7 percent were males and 58.7 percent were females. Only about 18 percent of the cases required hospitalization.
The counties with 100 or more cases include; Adams with 160 cases, 13 deaths and six long term care facility deaths; Attala with 196 cases, and four deaths, which occurred in long term care facilities; Bolivar with 118 cases, 9 deaths and three deaths in long term care facilities; Carroll with 103 cases, four deaths and three deaths in long term care facilities; Copiah with 163 cases and one death; Desoto with 336 cases and five deaths and one death in a long term care facility; Forrest with 315 cases, 21 deaths and 10 deaths in long term care facilities; Harrison with 198 cases, six deaths and one death in a long term care facility; Hinds with 675 cases, 15 deaths and nine deaths in long term care facilities; Holmes County with 223 cases, 19 deaths and eight deaths in long term care facilities; Jackson County with 276 cases, 11 deaths and two deaths in long term care facilities; Jones County with 249 cases, five deaths and one death in a long term care facility; Lafayette with 101 cases and three deaths; Lamar with 156 cases, four deaths and two deaths in long term care facilities; Lauderdale with 492 cases, 44 deaths and 26 deaths reported in long term care facilities; Leake County with 307 cases and four deaths; Leflore with 185 cases, 18 deaths and eight deaths in long term care facilities; Lincoln with 186 cases, 14 deaths and 10 deaths in long term care facilities; Madison with 466 cases, 12 deaths deaths and nine deaths in long term care facilities; Monroe County with 199 cases, 21 deaths and 19 deaths in long term care facilities; Neshoba County with 320 cases, 15 deaths and six deaths in long term care facilities; Newton with 142 cases and one death; Noxubee with 105 cases, two deaths both of which were in long term care facilities; Pike with 170 cases, 10 deaths and five deaths in long term care facilities; Rankin with 251 cases and six deaths; Scott with 462 cases, six deaths and one death in a long term care facility; Smith with 104 cases and six deaths, three of which were in long tern care facilities; Warren with 117 cases and two deaths; and Yazoo with 169 cases and two deaths.
MSDH estimates that about 6,268 people have recovered from COVID-19 as of May 3.
As of Sunday, a total of 95,885 people have been tested in Mississippi, either by the MSDH public health laboratory (15,737) or through external medical providers (80,148).
