As of Sunday, Mississippi has 6,094 cases of COVID-19, with 229 deaths, according to the Mississippi State Department of Health. In Pearl River County, there have been 153 COVID-19 cases and 14 deaths.

Still, only two long-term care facilities in the county have reported outbreaks, with a total of 30 cases reported in county long term care facilities and two deaths.

Issaquena County remains the only county in the state with no reported cases.

As of April 26, COVID-19 was still disproportionately affecting the black community, with 3,168 cases reported in African American residents, resulting in 139 deaths. A total of 2,034 white residents are reporting cases, resulting in 89 deaths.

Of the remaining cases, 277 are under investigation and 615 are attributed to other ethnicities. One death is marked “other.”

Underlying conditions can make people more vulnerable to COVID-19. Of the COVID-19 deaths in Mississippi, cardiovascular disease was seen in 130, diabetes in 104, hypertension in 118, obesity in 70, lung disease in 68, renal disease in 52, neurologic conditions in 50 and liver disease in six. In the majority of those categories more black than white people died. Only five COVID-19 deaths had no noted underlying conditions.

Broken down by age, there were three deaths in the 30-39 age group, six deaths in the 40-49 age group, 15 deaths in the 50-59 age group, 59 deaths in the 60-69 age group, 70 deaths in the 70-79 age group, 44 deaths in the 80-89 age group and 32 deaths in the 90 plus age group.

There are still no deaths attributed to COVID-19 cases in people younger than 29 in the state.

Of the total number of cases, 40.5 percent were in men and 59.1 percent were in women, and in 0.4 percent the gender is categorized as “unknown.”

The counties with 50 or more cases include; Adams with 116 cases, seven deaths and 21 cases in long-term care facilities; Attala with 86 cases, and 16 cases in long-term care facilities; Bolivar with 101 cases, seven deaths and 13 cases in long-term care facilities; Calhoun with 50 cases, three deaths and 23 cases in long-term care facilities; Chickasaw with 64 cases, five deaths and 21 cases reported in long-term care facilities; Coahoma with 58 cases, two deaths and one case reported in a long-term care facility; Copiah with 79 cases, one death and one case reported in a long-term care facility; Desoto with 266 cases, four deaths and two cases in a long term care facility; Forrest with 190 cases, eight deaths and 17 cases in long term care facilities; Hancock with 60 cases, five deaths and seven cases in a long term care facility; Harrison with 159 cases, six deaths and one case in a long term care facility; Hinds with 421 cases, seven deaths and 13 long term care facility cases; Holmes County with 114 cases, five deaths and 26 cases in long term care facilities; Jackson County with 240 cases, six deaths and 38 cases in long term care facilities; Jones County with 130 cases, one death and nine cases in long-term care facilities; Lafayette with 88 cases, three deaths and 35 cases in long term care facilities; Lamar with 92 cases and two deaths; Lauderdale with 304 cases, 19 deaths and 70 cases in long term care facilities; Leake County with 161 cases and one death; Lee County with 70 cases, four deaths and one case reported in a long-term care facility; Leflore with 137 cases, 15 deaths and 27 cases in long term care facilities; Lincoln with 136 cases, nine deaths and 45 cases in long term care facilities; Madison with 208 cases, six deaths and 13 facility cases; Marion with 58 cases, five deaths and 13 cases in long term care facilities; Monroe County with 144 cases, nine deaths and 69 facility cases; Neshoba County with 156 cases, three deaths and two cases in long term care facilities; Newton with 64 cases and one facility case; Noxubee with 52 cases and seven cases reported in long-term care facilities; Pike with 136 cases, five deaths and 12 cases reported in long term care facilities; Rankin with 171 cases, five deaths and six facility cases; Scott with 258 cases and eight facility cases; Smith with 65 cases and two long term care facility cases; Sunflower with 52 cases and two deaths; Tippah with 52 cases and seven deaths; Warren with 50 cases and two deaths; Washington with 77 cases, three deaths and four facility cases; Wilkinson County with 68 cases, seven deaths and five facility cases and Yazoo with 126 cases and one death.

As of Sunday, a total of 63,462 people have been tested in Mississippi, either by the MSDH public health laboratory (11,978) or through external medical providers (51,484).
