Pearl River Central’s Lady Blue Devils softball team took on the Perry Central Lady Bulldogs March 7 and won 20-5.

The victory over Perry Central was the second win in two days for PRC after beating Petal the night before 10-3.

The two game winning streak brought the Lady Blue Devils’ overall record to 4-1 on the season.

Eighth grader Jazmin Robertson pitched a complete game against Petal while only allowing two earned runs.

PRC’s batters were patient at the plate against Petal and earned seven walks.

Once on base the Lady Blue Devils were aggressive and had four stolen bases against the Lady Panthers.

Head Coach Tony Labella said the victory over Petal was the team’s third victory over a 6A team already this season, which bodes well for the rest of the year.

“Both pitchers they threw at us were above average, but we were patient. We had a couple defensive lapses, but I’d say it was our most complete game so far this season,” Labella said.

The Perry Central game saw an offensive explosion for the Lady Blue Devils, which included Keigan Pearson’s first home run of the year.

Sophomore Madison Smith pitched a complete game against Perry Central, but the game only went three innings because of the mercy rule in high school softball.

The mercy rule is a statute that ends a softball game if a team is winning by 12 runs after three innings or 10 runs after five innings.

Now on a two game win streak PRC will have its first district game of the season against the Hattiesburg Lady Tigers March 9 at 5 p.m.

Labella said the game against the Lady Tigers would be an important matchup for the Lady Blue Devils.

Labella said PRC must avoid becoming complacent after winning two games in a row, so they’ll be looking to defeat Hattiesburg and get an early season district win.

“Hattiesburg is the first district game, so that’s important because we have to start off the right way. We’ve beaten them a few times recently, but we’re expecting them to put up a good offense,” Labella said.

The pitching staff is only three deep and very young for PRC.

These early season games are good challenges for the pitchers to face, and Labella said his staff has showed they’re not scared of the big moment this season.

“A lot of times young pitchers, when there are mistakes behind them, they get flustered, especially against good line ups. I thought (Robertson) showed a lot of poise as an 8th grader (against Petal),” Labella said.

The Lady Blue Devils will be looking for more of that maturity on the mound Monday night.
