The Pearl River School District’s Board of Trustees held a special call meeting at 3 p.m. Thursday to discuss several matters.

First on the agenda was a resolution to retain legal counsel and a municipal advisor to assist the Board.

The legal counsel retained is the Jim Young Law Group, while MuniGroup serves as the investment and municipal advisor.

The motion passed unanimously before the Board moved onto the next topic of discussion.

The Board then approved a motion to enter into a loan and issue a limited tax promissory note of $3.9 million.

The decision was made so the District could continue financing the various construction projects across multiple campuses as part of a bond approved by the voters back in May of 2018. That bond is funding the construction of new facilities at the Carriere and McNeill campuses.

Part of Thursday’s motion to take out the $3.9 million will help repair severe storm damage to the temporary buildings the District’s administration uses for offices. The storm damaged those buildings last month and rendered them unusable.

There were already plans to move the offices from the temporary trailers to another location in the future as part of the bond, but the damage expedited the process, said Thomas Burleson, the District’s business manager.

Burleson said there were also some previous bids, which had been awarded that came in over budget.

The extra construction needed and additional costs means the original bond that was approved by the voters is now near its max.

“Since (the bond) was passed we’ve had a little growth in the county, so there’s a little leeway, but in addition to this we are close to maximum bond capacity,” Burleson said.

The Board will have its regularly scheduled meeting on March 12 at 5:30 p.m.

The meetings now take place in the chapel at the Endeavor Campus due to the damage on the temporary buildings at the Carriere campus.
