Poplarville School District names Teachers of the Year

The Poplarville School Board of Trustees recognized the Poplarville 2020 teachers of the year Tuesday at the Board’s regular meeting.
Kristen Alter from Poplarville Upper Elementary School was recognized as that school’s Teacher of the Year. Alter believes that to be effective a teacher must first start with a good relationship with their student, said Superintendent Konya Miller. Alter was recognized because she promotes a love of learning through hands on activities and life experience, said Miller.
Kindergarten teacher Brittany Alexander from Poplarville Lower Elementary was recognized as that school’s Teacher of the Year. Alexander believes in education that addresses the whole child and that a child must know that they are loved and cared for before they can perform at a maximum level, said Miller.
Sixth grade teacher Liska Wallace from the Middle School of Poplarville was recognized as that school’s Teacher of the Year. Wallace has been teaching for 18 years and challenges her students to reach greatness, said Miller. She teaches her students to question thoughtfully, Miller said.
Science teacher Allison Lee from Poplarville High School was recognized as that school’s Teacher of the Year. Lee is the advisor for student council and honor society and has been teaching for 24 years. She believes that students should leave her classroom with more than just knowledge, said Miller. Lee was also recognized as the District Teacher of the Year.
In other business the Board:
—Approved next school year’s calendar. All three of the county’s superintendents coordinated so that spring break will be held the same same week as other schools in the next school year, said Miller.
—Approved the internship program agreement with Pearl River Community College’s Business and Marketing Management Program. The partnership will provide the district with a marketing intern and a technology intern, who can each work for 20 hours a week. PRCC received a grant, so the interns will not cost the school any money, said Miller.
—Approved the child nutrition procurement plan for 2020.
