The Picayune Maroon Tide baseball team beat the Ocean Springs Greyhounds Feb. 25 with a 2-1 win.

It was the second consecutive game Picayune was able to win in a one run game. The victory helped keep the team’s undefeated streak going.

Head Coach Evan Nichelson said his team did a good job as a unit to pull out the victory.

A decisive factor in the game was the Maroon Tide’s pitching.

Logan Ledet started the game and had 10 strikeouts over four innings.

The senior leader then gave way to Trey Wells and Luke Smith who were able to close out the win for Picayune.

“I thought overall it was a very good team effort. It’s another big win for our guys,” Nichelson said.

Winning back-to-back games by a one run margin speaks volumes about the team’s mental toughness.

Pulling off close wins early in the season can only benefit the team when it heads into district play.

Nichelson said the squad’s ability to earn close wins is a positive change from last season.

“Last year there would be times where we would find ways to lose the game instead of finding ways to win the game. Hopefully playing these tight games prepares us for the rest of the season,” Nichelson said.

Ledet’s domination of the Greyhounds during his stint on the mound could foreshadow more gutsy performances in the future for the Maroon Tide.

Nichelson said Ledet’s experience is a valuable asset to the team because whenever he’s pitching Picayune can compete with anyone.

“When he’s on the mound we’ve got a great shot to win day in and day out when he toes the rubber. When he’s out there the team will play hard behind him,” Nichelson said.

Jakail Myers had the game winning RBI for Picayune in the 7th inning and has been a weapon on the base paths all season.

Myers has already stolen five bases in just three games, which is indicative of Myers’ speed and Nichelson’s willingness to let him be aggressive.

“Leadoff guys have to provide a spark and ‘Jet’ from day one has showed up ready to go. When we get him on we’re going to be really aggressive on the bases,” Nichelson said.

Picayune will now head into a span of three games in three days, starting Feb. 27 with a matchup against the Slidell Tigers.

That game will be followed by a doubleheader on Feb. 29 against the D’Iberville Warriors.

No matter the opponent, Nichelson said he wants his players to focus on their game.

If the athletes show up with the right amount of intensity Nichelson thinks his team can emerge victorious.

“I expect us to play our game and compete every single pitch. If we do those things I think we’ll be fine,” Nichelson said.
