The Pearl River Central girls soccer team took on the Long Beach Bearcats Tuesday evening, losing 2-0.

The game against the Bearcats came after a heartbreaking loss in penalty kicks to Hattiesburg on Jan. 10.

Head Coach Joe Weems said his team dominated the game against the Tigers last Friday.

However, the Lady Blue Devils were unable to find the back of the net, so the Tigers won on penalty kicks.

The loss may have impacted the players when they took on the Bearcats.

Long Beach is a talented team currently sitting atop the district with three consecutive district wins and no losses.

Just like in any sport, effort can overcome mistakes made by a team during a game.

Weems said his team struggled in that aspect as the Bearcats earned the victory.

“As good as they played Friday night, they were really flat (against Long Beach). I didn’t think the effort was good with the ladies and that was the first time all season that happened,” Weems said.

Now the Lady Blue Devils will need to put the performance against the Bearcats behind them.

A big district game with county rival Picayune is coming up on Jan. 17.

The match up already has a lot riding on it, but the game will also serve as senior night for the Lady Blue Devils.

Athletes who have given it their all for PRC will be recognized before taking on the Maroon Tide.

The two teams are evenly matched, but the previous game between the squads ended in a 2-1 Picayune victory.

The seniors on the squad will be hoping to end their careers against the Maroon Tide with a win.

Weems said both teams are on similar levels talent wise, so the backing of the crowd could be the deciding factor in the game.

“Looking at Picayune this week, it’s an even game. I’m hoping home field will help us,” Weems said.

To keep the athletes focused heading into the match up, the team will continue its normal practice schedule.

Weems said even though his team lacked energy against Long Beach, against Picayune that won’t be an issue.

“We’re going to follow the same routine. We don’t have to worry about being focused and motivated against Picayune. I think it’s going to be a fantastic game, it’s a real even match,” Weems said. The game is set to start at 5:30 p.m.
