The Pearl River County SPCA is fundraising to pay the medical expenses for a stray dog that was hit by a semi-truck earlier this week.

One-year-old Welsh corgi mix Carmella was brought into the shelter with two broken legs after she was hit by a semi-truck and left on the side of the road to die, said SPCA spokesperson Maria Diamond.

After spending several days on IVs and receiving x-rays to evaluate her injuries, Carmella was scheduled for surgery on Friday at Picayune Veterinary Clinic. The bill will come to the shelter, which does not have the funds to pay for the surgery, Diamond said.

“Just our day to day expenses take everything we get, and something extra like this really can set us back, but we try to save as many lives as we can when something like this happens,” Diamond said. 

The shelter is appealing to the public for help with the expense, Diamond said.

“The public usually has been very generous in helping us with these kinds of situations. We just appeal to all the animal lovers out there,” Diamond said.
