The Pearl River County Community Band will hold a free Veteran’s Tribute Concert Nov. 10 at 3 p.m. at the Brownstone Center on the Pearl River Community College campus in Poplarville.

The concert will be performed in a collaboration with the local community band and the City of Hattiesburg Concert Band. It will feature patriotic music, said Pearl River County Community Band Director Archie Rawls.

“It’s nice to be able to have a larger group to pay their best respects that they possibly can to our veterans,” Rawls said.

While the community band typically includes 40 members, the combined performance will be a band of approximately 75.

The music will include pieces the band plays annually, like an armed forces medley that contains songs for all military branches, and familiar John Philip Sousa marches, Rawls said.

The band will also perform other pieces, like an arrangement of music made popular by the Glenn Miller Orchestra during WWII. Everyone is welcome to attend the concert, Rawls said.

“We especially want to invite the veterans and their families to attend,” he said.

The logistics of attending additional rehearsals in Hattiesburg have been the biggest challenge in collaborating with another band, Rawls said, but the experience has been joyful.

“It’s really been a treat I think for our band to combine with the great players from the Hattiesburg group and get that experience,” Rawls said.

Rawls said he thinks the two bands will collaborate again for future special occasions, although probably not on an annual basis.
