Shot clinic coming to Poplarville

An animal shot clinic will be coming to northern Pearl River County for the first time on Oct. 26.

Animal Advocates of Pearl River County will be hosting the Pets in the Pearl shot clinic on Saturday Oct. 26 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Pearl River County Fairgrounds in Poplarville.

Attendees will be able to have their pets microchipped or receive rabies vaccines, adult shots for dog and cat wellness, or shots for kittens and puppies. Heartworm tests will also be available for dogs.

The prices range from $8 for a rabies vaccine to $30 for kitten or puppy shots. The event is cash only, and payments will cover the cost of the medical supplies and veterinary services. Any proceeds raised will be used to assist more animals in Pearl River County through efforts by Animal Advocates, said the nonprofit’s president Lauren Fitts.

Pets brought to the shot clinic should be on a leash or in a carrier.

The SPCA holds a biannual shot clinic in Picayune, said Fitts, which will take place in November. Animal Advocates hopes to reach people in the northern part of the county by holding an event in Poplarville.

“We’re hoping to reach some that have not heard about it or weren’t aware of it or weren’t able to make it down to Picayune for the clinics they had down there,” Fitts said.

The shot clinic will give pet owners who may not be able to afford vaccines, shots or heartworm tests a chance to access that medical care, Fitts said. The cost of the shots will be discounted compared to a normal veterinary appointment, Fitts said, but the shot clinic is not a substitution for regular veterinary visits.

“It’s not a true wellness visit where the vet’s looking at teeth and things like that. This is really just their basic shots,” Fitts said.

Attendees do not need to be county residents. The event will also include baked goods and lemonade sales, as well as a raffle. The event will be held indoors, so it will be held regardless of weather.
