A family’s love of dancing led to the creation of one of Picayune’s dance studios.

Owned by sisters Dena Guy and Lisa Keene, D&L Dance Center offers a variety of dance styles to children and adults.

Now in operation going on its 16th year, the Picayune location is her only studio after the effects of Hurricane Katrina closed Guy’s first location in Metarie, La.

The styles of dance offered at the center include ballet, tap, jazz, hip hop, contemporary, acrobatics, musical theater and modern. Adult classes are also offered.

Between the two sisters, they have about 100 years of dance experience,  and they are members of Dance Masters of America. As instructors, they also participate in continuing education workshops. Guy is also a graduate of the University of Buffalo in New York.

Guy said she continues to educate herself on the various aspects of dance because it is ever-evolving, and provides more subject matter to share with her students. There are also safety aspects of dance that are also continuously changing, Guy said.

Keene said there is a level of commitment in teaching dance, especially for private lessons since there is a lot of choreography and planning involved. That commitment also includes the passion to be able to successfully run a business, Guy said.

The sisters also say that watching the dancers grow as people is rewarding.

“When you can see growth in the kids each year, that is amazing,” Guy said.

Some of their former students are also lending their skills to help teach classes. Combined with some assistance from their other sisters and daughters, such as Lori Michel, Amy Smith and Ashley Briggs, the business has the support of their entire family.

Registration is ongoing for classes, which cater to children starting at age 2. Forms can be completed via email  at dguydance@bellsouth.net or by visiting the studio, located at 6420 Highway 11 N. Suite A, Carriere. The business is open Monday through Thursday from 5 to 9 p.m. Rehearsals for competitions and team events are held Fridays from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Private lessons are offered by appointment on the weekends.
