Poplarville residents Bill and Julie Brown will be hosting a free Open Range reunion on July 20 at their centennial farm on 183 Seeborn Ladner Road, Bill Brown said.

“It’s just going to be a good kind of old timey day,” Brown said.

The event will feature examples of work animals, including mule plowing, oxen driving, sheep sheering and cow milking. Visitors will be able to see traditional skills like butter churning, blacksmithing, quilting and wool spinning, Brown said.

The event will include a traditional service to honor veterans with the firing of a cannon at the start of the event at 10 a.m., Brown said, and the local chapter Sons of Confederate Veterans will be in attendance. The service will honor veterans who attend the event and veterans who served in the past, like the men who fought in the Revolutionary War, Brown said.

There will be a dinner at noon and guests are welcome to bring dishes, but there should be plenty of food including homemade ice cream, Brown said. Brown suggests participants bring a chair for the dinner.

The event will include history lessons. Brown said he wanted to hold the event because he believes there is a lot of history in the area.

“I go back 10 generations right here,” Brown said.

The event will last until 3 or 4 p.m.
