First Step Learning Lab provides a number of learning opportunities that can help local children succeed.

Wanda Worley, owner and operator of Picayune’s newest business that provides tutoring and other educational services, said she opened First Step Learning Lab in October of last year to offer after-school programs and summer camps to the community.

Her after-school program caters to children aged 3 to 12, and she also offers a tutoring program for children up to 9th grade while an ACT prep course helps high school students get the best score.

The idea to start the business came during a conversation with her godmother, who passed away recently. Worley said that during that conversation her godmother made an offhand comment that Worley should open her own school.

Since it seemed like a good way to provide a positive influence to children in the community, and after her godmother’s passing, Worley did just that, establishing her business at 207 E. Canal Street, Suite C in Picayune.

She is currently offering a summer camp until Aug. 2, from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and also offers pickup and drop off services.

Since she knows how tough it is for some families to make ends meet, Worley said she keeps her rates affordable.

“We want all children to succeed,” Worley said.

During the summer camp, she said the children are taken on three to four field trips each week, at times to the movies, library, local splash pad, zoo, aquarium and even museums.

“Education is a priority, so we put that first,” Worley said.

During the school year, her after-school program is offered from 3 to 6 p.m. Worley said she is giving consideration to offering services on Saturdays.

First Step Learning Lab also offers a few free services, such as helping older children apply for grants or scholarships and writing resumes to apply for a job. Worley said she will also offer to teach young people how to conduct themselves during a job interview.

The business employs four part time people and can be reached by calling 601-347-1246.
