Graduates of George Washington Carver High School’s class of 1967 will hold a Homecoming Celebration next week.

The event is scheduled for July 3 and starts at 7 p.m. at The Grand on South Haugh Avenue in Picayune.

Event organizer Dorris Bogan Granderson said the event is already sold out, and will host 200 former students of George Washington Carver High School, a now shuttered segregated school that closed in 1970.

For this event, the group will honor the school’s previous homecoming queens and recognize two musical groups.

Of the more than 40 homecoming queens, 12 have responded to invitations and plan to attend. Granderson said that one such queen, passed away a day after receiving her invitation, but since she was planning to attend her daughter will be in attendance in her stead.

Prior to the event, the homecoming queens in attendance will be crowned and draped before being transported via limousine to The Grand where they will be honored. The queens in attendance will include 91 year-old Yvonne Ott Johnson.

Also during the event, two musical acts that were formed by members of the high school, the Blue Notes, a female vocalist group and their backup band J.L. Breland and the Flames, will be recognized.
