The County Community Based Recovery Committee has hired a disaster reservist to do casework and is still waiting to receive money from the state, said Emergency Management Director Danny Manley during Monday’s Board of Supervisors meeting.

The committee was assembled as part of the application process to apply for up to $250,000 from the Disaster Assistance Housing Grant through the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency. 

The grant money would be put toward buying construction materials to repair homes that were affected by the storm early in May, Manley said.

The committee consists of seven community members, including community leaders and some pastors, Manley said. Jameye Martin of Manna Ministries is the administrator of the committee, Manley said. The process to do repair work, match volunteers with a need and obtain building materials will probably take six months, he said.

The Board also awarded Davis Lee Manley with the Mississippi Association of Supervisors County Employee Scholarship. The $500 scholarship is awarded to students who intend to attend college in Mississippi. Davis Manley plans to attend Mississippi State University.

In other business the Board:

— Heard that the air-conditioning materials for Pearl River County’s Lenoir Rowell Correctional Facility have been ordered and installation crews are awaiting delivery. The Board approved the replacement of two 55-ton HVAC units at the jail in May and awarded a contract for the work to Universal Services LLC, according to previous coverage.

— Heard that the county overlay project on Ceasar, Liberty and Birchmount roads is scheduled to begin June 24.

— Approved a motion to apply for a $6,800 grant from MEMA that if awarded would be used to buy computers or MSWIN radios.

— Approved a motion to apply for a $6,000 grant from the Mississippi Department of Homeland Security that if awarded would go toward buying six dry suits for volunteer firefighters to safety conduct water search and rescue.

The next Board of Supervisors meeting will be held Monday, July 1 at the courthouse on Julia Street.
