Poplarville District recognizes student accomplishments

The Poplarville School Board meeting was packed Monday night with students and parents to recognize Poplarville High School’s students for their accomplishments during the 2018-2019 school year.

Chris Castaneda was recognized as star student, while Erin Gipson was recognized as star teacher.

The PHS men’s soccer team was recognized for being the District Champions for District 74A. This is the first time in Poplarville High School’s history that the men’s soccer team has been district champion, said Principal John Will.

The Poplarville High School was also awarded the great schools College Success Award, which recognizes public schools that do outstanding jobs in preparing seniors for college. Forty-six public schools in Mississippi earned the award.

The Poplarville High School Football team was recognized for being District 7 4A Champions and South State Champions.

The Slow Pitch Softball team was recognized for being District 74A Champions.

The Student Council was recognized for attending the state conference. Student Council member Paige Lee earned first place in the high school speech contest, while teacher Alison Lee was awarded the MSASC High School Student Council Advisor of the Year for 2019.

Special Olympics athletes were also recognized for their achievements. Athlete Conner Miller was recognized for placing 1st in the tennis ball throw, as was athlete Austin Herndon who also placed 1st in the same event. Sam Arceneaux was recognized for placing 1st in the 100 meter.

The PHS choir was recognized for earning all superior marks at the MHSAA State Choir Competition. The marching band was recognized for taking 13th place and acquiring all superior marks as well.

The school’s dance team was recognized for earning 3rd place in the kick routine competition at the MHSAA state competition. The cheer team was recognized for taking 5th place at the MHSAA state competition.

Will said he is proud of all of the students and the staff.
