Picayune Police Department’s annual Summer Camp is so popular that spots in the fun filled offering that also provides learning experiences filled up this year in less than an hour.

Capt. Theresa Milar said that applications are no longer being accepted and there is currently a waiting list.

However, she is looking for businesses and citizens who would be willing to donate funds or supplies to the camp. For $50, a child is fully funded to attend the camp, which features a number of fun and educational activities.

Some of those planned for this year include rock climbing, Bingo, an arcade in Gulfport, seeing a movie at the theater along with some crafts such as making tie-dye shirts and creating posters advocating against littering.

Supplies needed this year include simple things such as paper plates, forks, spoons and condiments.

“We will take anything like that,” Milar said.

Speakers this year will cover topics such as avoiding cigarette smoking, bullying and making good life choices.

But money is also accepted to help fund the many activities and the travel expenses. This year, the camp will have to cover the cost of the inflatable water slide rentals for two weeks, which totals $1,000 because a business owner who previously donated that service has since quit the business.
