Pearl River County Arts League will hold an art show and competition from April 12 to 14th. Members of the community are invited to not only attend the show, but submit their own works of art. Children are welcome to attend and submit pieces.

Gail Sheasby, the League’s publicity chair, said that pieces of artwork are still being accepted to the competition, which includes traditional paintings created with oil, acrylic, pastel colored pencil and water color. Other categories include photography and 3D. The 3D category can be any work that is not a painting or photograph, such as a woodcarving, metal work or ceramic piece. Monetary prizes will be issued for first through third place winners, along with a ribbon. Sheasby said a large monetary prize will be issued to the artist chosen as Best of Show, which will be chosen from all categories.

The entry fee for each piece is $5, and entrants can choose only one piece entered that won’t be up for sale during the show. Proceeds from the sale of a piece will go to the artist, minus a 20 percent commission that will go to the League, Sheasby said.

There is also a category for student art. Only ribbons will be issued to those winners.

The show will be held at the Kaycee Hall, located on Carroll Street in Picayune. Friday, the show will take place from 5 to 8 p.m. and include refreshments such as wine and food. All pieces will be awarded their respective prizes that night at 6:30.

Saturday the show will take place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Sunday the show will be from noon until 4 p.m. All submitted pieces will need to remain at the Kaycee Hall until the show ends on Sunday. Anyone who purchased a piece will be able to pick it up after the show ends on Sunday.

Each year the League presents a student with the Margaret Dawsey Scholarship to a young person attending a Pearl River County school who intends to attend a Mississippi community college or university to study art.

A raffle for two pieces of art will be held during the show to raise money for that scholarship. Tickets can be purchased at the show and a drawing for that raffle will take place on Sunday at 3:30 p.m.
