Troopers with the Mississippi Highway Patrol reportedly worked more than 200 vehicle-related collisions, arrested more than 100 people for DUI offenses and worked two collisions that involved a fatality statewide.

According to a departmental release, 6,524 citations were issued and 124 DUI arrests were made during the previous weekend in an enforcement effort the department called “Making it Home for the Holidays.”

During that period, which began on Dec. 21, and ended Christmas Day, troopers responded to 203 motor vehicle crashes that included 38 injuries and 2 fatalities on state, federal highways and interstates, the release states.

“Making It Home For The Holidays will continue through the end of the year in order to promote traffic safety,” the release states.

Within Troop K, which includes the six coastal counties of the state, including Pearl River County, there were a total of 16 collisions, of which five included injuries. Five DUI arrests were conducted within Troop K during the enforcement period, the release states.

Neither of the fatal collisions occurred within Pearl River County or Troop K.

One of the fatal collisions occurred on December 21, 2018 at 10:44 p.m., on Mississippi Highway 4 in Tate County, the release states. The collision involved 70-year-old George E. Harrison of Coldwater, Miss., who was driving westbound on MS-4 in a 2019 Volvo. At that time, 30-year-old Tim E. Curtis, 30, of Ansonia, Conn. was eastbound on Mississippi Highway 4 driving a 2011 Ford pickup truck. The two vehicles collided head-on. Curtis suffered fatal injuries during the collision. He was pronounced dead at the scene, the release states. Harrison was transported to a local hospital for treatment of his injuries, the release states.

Another collision occurred on Dec. 23, at 3:38 p.m., on Mississippi Highway 9 in Calhoun County. Troopers arrived to find that a 2009 Honda Civic driven by 48-year-old Thomas W. Horton, of Vardaman, Miss. was southbound on Mississippi Highway 9 when it collided head-on with a northbound 2007 Chevrolet pickup truck driven by 71-year-old Jerry D. Holder, 71, of Vardaman, Miss., the release states.

Horton suffered fatal injuries during the collision and was pronounced at the scene. Holder was transported to an Oxford hospital for treatment of injuries he suffered during the collision.

Both collisions are still under investigation by troopers
