Several people were arrested by Picayune Police detectives for drug related violations during routine patrols.

According to departmental press releases, both cases were worked on Oct. 24, the first of which took place at 4:18 that evening, when occupants of a vehicle appeared to be passing a pipe back and forth.

Detectives approached the vehicle and spoke with the occupants. Initially the driver gave a false name, but was later identified as Gregory Derrick “Voodoo” Deberry, 39, of 4911 Friertuck Dr., New Orleans, La. His passenger was identified as 37-year-old Tiji Lamarc “TJ” Harris of 14320 Peltier Dr., New Orleans, the release states.

As the detectives spoke with Deberry and Harris, they observed the pipe containing a rock like substance suspected to be crack cocaine sitting in plain sight within the vehicle, leading to a search of Deberry’s person that found a bag of a substance suspected to be heroin.

A search of Harris located a syringe, the release states. Inside the vehicle, the detectives found more glass pipes, a syringe loaded with water, digital scale with a brown powdery substance suspected to be heroin, leading Deberry to be arrested for possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute within 1,500 feet of a school or church, providing false information to a law officer and possession of paraphernalia. Harris was arrested for possession of paraphernalia, the release states. The value of the heroin seized from Deberry was estimated to be $400, the release states.

That same day just after 7 p.m., an officer patrolling Rosa Street observed a motorcycle weaving from one side of the street to the other before pulling into the driveway of a home.

Detectives conducted a stop on the driver, identified as James Alexander Jr., 51, of 112 Carver Dr., the release states. While speaking with Alexander in front of the home, a woman identified as Jereni Lachay Smith, 36, of 612 Bolar St., was seen sitting at a picnic table nearby by a responding patrol officer.

As the detective spoke with Alexander, he noticed a bag of marijuana at Alexander’s feet, leading him to be issued a citation and be released. However, while the patrol officer spoke with Smith, he noticed a bag of Percocet and Xanax pills along with a hand rolled cigar containing a green leafy substance suspected to b e marijuana on her purse, which was on the table. In her purse, Smith had $300.

Smith was arrested for felony possession of a controlled substance, misdemeanor possession of a controlled substance and possession of marijuana, the release states. Since the money was found in proximity of the narcotics, it was seized, the release states.
