A Picayune man was arrested last week by Picayune Police personnel for the alleged illegal possession of narcotics during a routine traffic stop.

According to a departmental release, the arrest took place on Sept. 27, just before 7 p.m. when narcotics detectives on patrol saw the driver of a vehicle fail to use his turn signal. During a traffic stop for the offense, the detectives noticed the smell of marijuana coming from inside the vehicle.

All occupants were asked to exit and a search was conducted where the detectives found a large plastic bag containing 120 grams of a green leafy substance suspected to be high grade marijuana and a pill bottle containing nine grams of an off white rock like substance suspected to be crack cocaine. The release states that investigative techniques determined the narcotics belonged to 26-year-old Kelton Devon Jones, of 971 Shirley Dr., leading to his arrest for two counts of possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute. The driver was issued a citation for no turn signal and released at the scene, the release states.

The estimated street value of the marijuana was $500, and the crack cocaine was estimated to be worth $450, the release states.
