Raffle to benefit local deputy

Law enforcement officers with the Pearl River County Sheriff’s Department have a network that provides assistance when they are in need.
Chief Investigator Marc Ogden said the Pearl River County Deputies Association has been able to provide that assistance to several of their own in the past. The most recent was a lunch plate fundraiser held in conjunction with the Blue Knights MS Chapter IX, which brought in a total of $10,000 between the local law enforcement motorcycle club and the Pearl River County Deputies Association holding events in Picayune and Poplarville respectively, Ogden said.
Those funds were provided to deputy Bryan Anthony to help defer his expenses from a medical emergency.
Ogden said that the organization has been providing this assistance to local law enforcement officers in need of a financial boost in tough times.
A recent fundraiser was launched earlier this month to raise money for deputy Randy Messa, who recently underwent a major surgery. The funds raised in this effort will help him with medical bills and travel involved with that surgery.
Ogden said the fundraiser is for a Glock 19x 9mm pistol, sponsored by Pearl River County Supervisor District II Malcolm Perry, who also owns Black Dog Firearms.
The value of the firearm donated for the raffle is $600, and the prize includes the firearm, two 17 round magazines, one 19 round magazine and a locking case.
Tickets are $10 each and can be purchased at City Carpet in Picayune, Todd’s Collision in Carriere, Handy Cleaners in Picayune, Pot Lickers in Poplarville, Millcreek Archery and Hunting Supplies in Carriere or from a deputy, Ogden said.
The drawing for a winner will be held on Sept. 7 at noon at Black Dog Firearms, located at 5821 Highway 43 N, Carriere.
Ogden said the Sheriff’s Department appreciates Perry for sponsoring the raffle and the community and local businesses for supporting their local law enforcement agency.
While the winner does not have to be present during the drawing to claim their prize, Ogden said a background check will be conducted by Black Dog Firearms before the gun can be claimed.
