Students attending local school districts within Pearl River County will be allowed to participate in a national effort entitled #enough, which involves a walkout.

According to actionnetwork.org, the event is planned to take place at 10 a.m. across the country in every time zone Wednesday. The site states that the walkout is in response to “Congress’ inaction to do more than tweet thoughts and prayers in response to the gun violence plaguing our schools and neighborhoods.”

Poplarville School District Superintendent Carl Merritt said an event has been planned at the high school to give students an extra 15 to 20 minute break where they can participate in the effort. Students will have the opportunity to sign two banners during the event. Merritt said one will be displayed at the school, while the second will be sent to the town of Parkland in Florida to let them know they are in the District’s thoughts.

“We just want them to know they are being remembered,” Merritt said.

Picayune School District Assistant Superintendent Brent Harrell said while the District is not officially organizing the walkout, they will take no disciplinary action against students who decide to participate.

Picayune Memorial High School Principal Kent Kirtland said students will be notified via an announcement in the morning that they can participate in the 17 minute walkout, which will be held on the school’s campus. He said that one teacher was discussing the possibility of allowing students to sign a banner, but could not say if that plan was finalized.

Calls to the Pearl River County School District for comment were not returned by press time Tuesday.
