A young man from Picayune was cited for no insurance after his vehicle was found unoccupied in the Hobolochitto Creek Thursday morning.

Pearl River County Sheriff’s Department Chief Deputy Shane Tucker said deputies were sent to a bridge over the creek on West Union Road Thursday just after 6:30 a.m. after a passerby noticed the vehicle upside down in the water.

Deputies arrived and determined that the vehicle was unoccupied before calling for a wrecker service to remove the vehicle, later determined to be a 2008 Lincoln MKZ.

An investigation also ensued to identify the owner. 

Tucker said that once the owner was reached, she arrived on scene with her son, 18-year-old Brandon Callahan, who was the last person to drive the car. Callahan appeared to be uninjured.

Investigation into the cause determined that at the time of the accident, which is unknown, the vehicle was eastbound on West Union Road when it left the roadway, hit an embankment and flew through the air for about 80 feet before landing upside down in the creek.

Callahan was later cited for no insurance, Tucker said.

Tucker said traffic was diverted while crews worked to remove the vehicle from the creek. The scene was reportedly cleared by 8:30 that same morning.
