Special Olympics to be held at Space Center

In the next month and a half, local young athletes with an intellectual disability will have the opportunity to participate in the annual Area III Stennis Special Olympics at INFINITY Space Center.

Each year, the Special Olympics brings together athletes from the area to compete in various track and field events. This event not only allows our community’s special young people to compete in a day of physical games, it also gives them an avenue to build a positive self-image.

Just like everyone, those with a disability also seek out ways to have a positive impact on their community. Many of these young athletes hold a job in the area, providing a valuable service. While contributing to society is a great way to build self-confidence, successfully competing in an athletic event can boost a person’s self-image even further. Plus, giving these young athletes the opportunity to compete and attend these events gives them the opportunity to meet new people and make new friends.

But to effectively hold the Area III Stennis Special Olympics, volunteers are needed. Anyone interested in providing that necessary help can either become an athlete’s friend during the competition, or provide assistance anywhere else that it is needed during the day. If you decide to assist an athlete for the day, you will be an integral part of that athlete’s success during the day while you cheer them on and provide necessary support.

Overall, we should help young athletes with a disability accomplish their dreams because just like everyone, we all play an integral part in making our community unique. Also, while individuals with a disability might require more detailed attention and help on a daily basis, let’s make sure to lend a helping hand when possible. Because competing in events like these means the world to them.
