Monday morning, the Pearl River County Board of Supervisors continued a series of discussions from its last meeting.

Pearl River County Engineer Les Dungan updated the Board about recent bridge work during the meeting. Dungan said the final inspection of four bridges replaced on Spring Hill Road will take place Tuesday and the road now is open to traffic. Dungan said contractors are working to complete the bridge on Hickory Grove Road, which should be open to traffic in a few days.

Dungan said there are three projects in the right-of-way acquisition stage, which include Harry Sones Road, Sones Chapel Road and the Nellie Burks Road.

“(We) are in the need of cooperation from the joint land owners to proceed …,” Dungan said.

Dungan said work on two bridges on Progress Road will begin after the New Year.

At the meeting, the Board recognized Dr. James Sones for his service on the Pearl River County Utility Authority Board of Directors since its establishment in 2006.

“I accept this recognition on behalf of the Board. We’ve accomplished a good many things and literally scratched the surface. We have a wonderful place in Pearl River County which has a lot of potential,” Sones said.

The Board also accepted bids collected by the road department for paving materials including hot mix, liquid asphalt and limestone and awarded the bids to the lowest bidder. Rates on the materials vary depending on the delivery distance.

District II Supervisor Malcolm Perry discussed possible additions to the existing county courthouse such as an administrative office, an office for the circuit clerk and circuit court, E-911/ planning and development office, tax assessor and tax collector office, chancery clerk and chancery court office, an office for the data processing and mapping department and the sheriff’s office.

The Board reviewed the proposal and requested Buchart Horn Architects, who are handling the project, to be present at the next Board meeting to answer questions by other Board members.
