I’ve always loved the music of a pipe organ. No other instrument I know can set my heart soaring as high, or wring as much emotion from me.

I find myself swept away in a deeper level of worship when a pipe organ is part of a service. Whether in a massive historic cathedral, a modern church sanctuary or a movie auditorium, those vibrating pipes manage to fill the room with a pulsing reminiscent of a heartbeat.

While many churches have moved to electronic keyboards and synthesizers, or full-fledged combo bands, some have kept and cared for the treasure of a pipe organ.

Such a church is First United Methodist Church of Poplarville, MS.

The congregation faced the loss of the organ recently when the organ demonstrated intermittent problems.

The church organist has been known to switch to the piano mid-service because of strange hums or crackles.

Organ repairs seemed out of reach of the congregation until a generous memorial offering made the project possible.

Pearl River County is blessed to have this gem of an organ back in service for the future.

The members of Poplarville FUMC have invited the community to celebrate with them at the rededication service for the instrument.

With a guest organist playing the concert and a reception following the service, it promises to be a memorable afternoon. I know I’m looking forward to 3 p.m. on December 3 when I’ll be able to soar once again on the wings of music and lose myself in worship.
