Picayune Main Street and the Greater Picayune Area Chamber of Commerce would like to encourage residents to get a head start on their Christmas shopping by participating in Small Business Saturday on Nov. 25.

Small Business Saturday was initiated by American Express in 2010 to help small business owners encourage people to shop locally.

Picayune Main Street Director Reba Beebe said small business is the heart of a town and helps strengthen the community as a whole.

“These owners need support from the local community as they aim to attract more and more people to our unique downtown and see what its got to offer,” Beebe said.

Beebe said when people shop small, the majority of the money and taxes stay local which is in the best interest for the area’s economic development.

This year, 17 shops in downtown Picayune will be participating in Small Business Saturday. Shops include the Angel’s Place, Crystal Gallery, April’s of Picayune, Barze’ Place Antique Mall and Collectibles, Gibson House Antiques, Bella Skin, Charlotte’s Web, The Painted Mantel, Bonnie Blue Boutique, Glass Porch, Divas Dazzle, Barousse Designs, Memory Lane, Shades Of The Past, Rustic Elegance, Dance Wear Connection, Shabby Chic, Paul’s Pastry, Melinda’s Fine Gifts and The Teddy Bear House Museum.

Beebe said some of the businesses will be offering special Christmas deals and free gifts throughout the day.
