Pediatric flu shots are now available in all Mississippi State Department of Health county clinics.

The seasonal flu shot is recommended to person older than 6-months.

“It’s very important for young and old people to get the flu shot,” Tracy Ladner, of Picayune Family Health Center, said. “We also recommend for people of all ages to get vaccinated in order to prevent the flu.”

The flu can also lead to pneumonia, ear infections or sinus infections so its best to get the shot to prevent those ailments, Ladner said.

The Picayune Family Health Center also offers payment plans to individuals interested in getting the flu shot, but don’t have insurance or can’t afford it.

“We do encourage all Mississippians six months and older to get vaccinated,” MDSH Epidemiologist Dr. Paul Byers said in a release from the Health Department. “Now is the time to get vaccinated since the vaccine can take up to two weeks to produce immunity. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that everyone get their flu shot by the end of October for optimal protection this flu season.”

Basic infection control measures such as covering the mouth when coughing or sneezing, staying at home when adults or their children are sick and washing hands frequently can reduce the spread of the flu.
