Picayune has a great business community

Acouple of years ago, the varsity football field at Picayune Memorial High School received an update that began with a presentation at the District’s School Board of Trustees meeting.

The gist of the presentation involved raising funds from the community to ultimately install a new synthetic turf that would not only last for years, but also liven the stadium up with graphics, logos and advertising.

It was installed a short time later, and still looks as new as the day the work was complete. The new field was completed in time for the beginning of the 2015 football season.

Now, another field is in the running to have similar work done, except on a smaller scale.

This time, instead of the entire field being synthetic, the project will install a permanent base made of concrete, clay and other materials upon which the synthetic material will be secured. When that material suffers from too much wear and tear, another can be installed at a fraction of the cost involved in the initial installation.

And just as the efforts to install the field at the football field involved donations, this project will also be community funded

Coaches presenting the project to the Board of Trustees said that only one more sponsor is needed to kick in the last $1,500.

Nine sponsors have already signed up, indicating there is interest in helping our local varsity baseball team put its best foot forward when hosting other teams. The new home plate is said to include a logo, which will more than likely make the visiting team a bit jealous when they step up to the plate.

It’s good to know the Board agrees that improvements to our local sporting venues are important. Most of all, our business community should be applauded for providing a majority of the funding for this project to move forward.
