Elder Wilfred T. Mayfield, Sr. was born to Wilfred Lee Mayfield and Gwendolyn Sellers-Mayfield in Hancock County, Mississippi, July 3. 1941. He accepted Christ at an early age at Little Providence Baptist Church and New Hebron Baptist Church. In later years, he accepted his calling, served as a United Methodist Elder for over 26 years and was named Pastor Emeritus.

Elder Mayfield believed in education and hard work. He received his high school diploma from George Washington Carver High School in Picayune, Mississippi, his B.S. degree from Southern University in New Orleans, Louisiana, and later acquired one Master’s Degree in Library Science from the University of Illinois, Urbana, Illinois and a Master’s Degree from Memphis Theological Seminary. Elder Mayfield was currently working to obtain his Doctorate Degree in Theology at Memphis Theological Seminary. Elder Mayfield was very proud to be a member of Sigma Pi Phi Boule’ and a Lifetime Member of Omega Psi Fi Fraternity.

Despite his eligibility for retirement, Elder Mayfield was working at Northwest Community College.

Elder Wilfred Mayfield departed life peacefully on October 10, 2017. Mr. Mayfield leaves to fulfill his legacy, one daughter, Karen (Eugene) Mcfarland of Cordova, Tennessee; two sons, Wilfred (Saraiyah) Mayfield, Jr., of Houston, Texas and Travis (Asha) Mayfield of Simpsonville, South Carolina; a special niece Darlene Gwin-Lauseuer of Gulfport, Mississippi; sisters, Dr. Barbara (George) Coatney of Waveland, Mississippi and Sue Matias of Bear, Delaware; a special grandson, Trellony Mayfield; grandchildren Kamari, Kyran, Joshua, Jeremiah, De Forrest, Jared, Dallas, Netaniah, Aashhia, Zion, AsaiYah and great-grandchildren Xavier, Christopher, Maxine, Jerryn, Audrey, Madison, Destiny, Myot, Iwa Pele, a special nephew Ron Thomas of Atlanta, Georgia; two uncles, Dr. Franklin Sellers of Carson, California and Lester White of San Diego, California; two aunts Lillie Kimble of Killeen, Texas and Ethelyn (Johnny Ray) Williams of Houston, Texas; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, October 21, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. at Natalie Doxey Alumni Bldg., Morehouse Auditorium, Rust College, 105 Rust Avenue, Holly Springs, Mississippi. Visitation will be held Friday, October 20, 2017 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Asbury United Methodist Church Family Life Center, 225 West College Avenue, Holly Springs, Mississippi 38635 with Omega Memorial Services at 4:45 p.m. Entrusted to J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home.

Graveside Services will be held Sunday, October 22, 2017 at 1:00 p.m.at Catahoula Cemetery, Hwy 43 South, Picayune, Mississippi 39466. Entrusted to Brown’s Funeral Home, Picayune, Mississippi.
