POPLARVILLE — The Poplarville Board Of Aldermen met Tuesday evening to tackle topics on the agenda.

Joan Bassett, of the Poplarville Historical Society, requested that the city pay for the interior renovation of the Old City Hall where the museum is housed.

She expressed concern that the air conditioning system has not been functional in some time, posing a danger to the historical items.

“Some of the items include photographs and military uniforms and people keep giving me items to add to the museum and I’m running out of room,” Bassett said.

She said that the Poplarville Historical Society recently held a yard sale, which helped pay upgrades to the building’s electric system. “We are a small group, with a small budget and we need help,” Bassett said.

Tthe Poplarville Historical Society made brochures, which have been placed at the Pearl River County Welcome Center in order to attract more people to visit historical buildings within Poplarville.

“We have lots of visitors, from here and out of state, this is something important to preserve as it serves educational purposes and it would be a great asset to the community,” Bassett said.

Alderwoman Anne G. Smith said that she would like the Board to help the group, but would have to look at quotes from contractors and investigate the matter further.

At the end of Bassett’s presentation, the Board approved a motion to advertise for bids for the repairs to the HVAC system.
