Members of the Rotary Club of Picayune heard about upcoming efforts to expand last year’s popular Trunk or Treat event during their Sept. 19 meeting.

Shane Smith, manager of the Picayune Wendy’s, organized last year’s event, which was popular with area residents and their children. He said that 3,000 people came to that event.

This year, he will hold two Trunk or Treat events. One in the morning from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., and a second will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Both events will take place at Friendship Park on Halloween Day, Oct. 31.

Smith said he wants this year’s event to be just as popular, so he is asking community members and business leaders to become a part of it. So far, he’s talked with 33 businesses in the area, many of which have indicated they will participate, Smith said.

Representatives with the Picayune Fire Department plan to participate, and he will also try to get some of the schools involved so special needs children can attend the event during the day.

This year’s event will feature bounce houses, beanbag toss, oversized bowling and concession stands.

Anyone who would like to participate is welcome. Smith asks that they call 601-798-5590 to let him know in advance.

“I just want to get as many people out to participate as possible,” Smith said.

There is no cost to participate in the event.
