Senior Center to celebrate National Senior Center Month

September signifies National Senior Center Month, a time of celebration for those in Pearl River County with the theme of “masters of aging,” Senior Center of South Pearl River County Executive Director David Sykes said.
The theme emphasizes the wisdom and life experiences senior citizens offer to better their communities. This includes programs that empower older generations to be confident and independent.
In harmony with the month long celebration, the Senior Center has planned unique activities, including an arts and crafts show at 9 a.m. to noon on Sept. 22. During the event, artisans who’ve crafted original paintings, drawings, woodcarvings, quilts and ceramics will present their masterpieces, some of which will be for sale.
“Today’s seniors aren’t looking to slow down,” Sykes said in a release. “They want to make new friends, learn new skills and remain relevant in the community. We support their curiosity and growth through fun and engaging programs.”
The first-year executive director said the seniors surprise him every day, but what sticks out the most is how lively the seniors are on a day-to-day basis.
“They are excited all the time. They are always ready to do something fun and seriously never slow down. It’s great to see,” Sykes said. “We try to provide fun activities for them every opportunity we get. They just love celebrating life.”
Sykes also has a special breakfast scheduled for the seniors at the center in September to give them some energy when participating in the many outdoor games and activities to prepare for the senior games in November.
On Sept. 11, the Center will have an AARP driving course for its seniors.
And to wrap up the month, karaoke will be offered on the last Friday of September.
