Plan for activities during retirement

Often we dream of the day we will retire. That grand day when the cake is cut and we receive a gold watch, plaque and a pat on the back for a job well done for many decades.

In preparation for this day, we put away untold sums of money, not just in the form of Social Security, but in a variety of other investments as well.

Those investments will certainly entail ensuring we are as free from debt as possible, by  paying off the home and hopefully the vehicles as well, in order to leave us with only one thing to worry about.

But what we may not plan for in all of this dreaming is how we will fill our day with conversation, games or other activities.

After spending so much of our lives with so much to do, responsibilities to meet and people to care for, it’s understood that retirement will be a time for rest, relaxation, and a lack of responsibilities.

It’s unfortunate to think that such a time comes at the very end of our lives, but such is the way of the world.

But if we take the time to realize that there is purpose after you’ve made your fortune, we can begin to not only plan to have a comfortable living but for many days filled with fun instead of mundane tasks.

That’s because people are living long now. Some may have another 20 to 30 years to find things to do during retirement.

It’s been said before, keeping the mind and body busy is essential. Lounging at home with long naps sounds great right now, but that will grow boring, forcing us to look for a task or hobby.

Fortunately there are some things to do in Pearl River Country. Outside of tending the lawn, going for walks and attending one of the many local meetings and events, retirees should consider making a visit to the Senior Center of South Pearl River County.

There, people will find a number of games, activities and hobbies to keep them engaged.

Do you like to dance? Put your name on the roster for one of the line dancing classes. If you’re like me, you’ll probably find the wood carving class more fun. There, you can learn from a local man how to make works of art from wood.

Other activities include playing cards, dominoes and even taking up a painting class.

And don’t forget that there are a number of clubs that would love to increase the membership with driven people who have  time on their hands.
