Officers with the Picayune Police Department were taken on a high-speed chase that ended when the suspect got stuck at a railroad crossing blocked by a train.

The incident occurred Thursday evening just before 10:30, when a local woman reported a juvenile had stolen her vehicle from a local gas station, according to departmental reports.

Earlier in the evening a 16-year-old male approached the victim and requested the keys to her vehicle so she could give him a ride to his girlfriend’s house. The victim told police that she agreed to give him a ride, but only after she conducted some business within the store.

When she left the store she noticed the suspect was sitting in the driver’s seat of her vehicle, prompting her to request assistance from a passerby to remove the young man from the vehicle.

Several attempts to remove the juvenile from the driver’s seat were unsuccessful, until he finally put the car in drive and fled the scene in the victim’s vehicle, the report states.

A patrol officer later located the vehicle parked in the apartment building of the suspect’s original destination. However, the suspect then drove the vehicle from the parking lot, leading the officer to attempt to conduct a stop, reports state.

The suspect drove the vehicle down Cooper Road, turning onto Highway 43 toward Highway 11. The pursuit then continued south along Highway 11 at a high rate of speed until the suspect tried to turn onto Bruce Street, finding a train had blocked the road, according to the reports.

Officers approached the vehicle and gave several commands for the juvenile to exit the vehicle, but he failed to comply, forcing officers to escort him from the vehicle and to the ground where he continued to resist arrest, the report states.

He was eventually taken into custody without further incident on the offenses of felony taking of a motor vehicle, felony fleeing or eluding a law enforcement officer in a motor vehicle, reckless driving, disorderly conduct failure to comply, resisting arrest and no driver’s license, the reports state.

The juvenile has since been taken to the Jones County Juvenile Detention Center to be detained.
