The freshman experience can certainly be one to remember

Oh to be a freshman in high school again.

In the next week, the three high schools in Pearl River County will welcome incoming freshmen.

Not too long ago, I too embarked on this exciting journey, knowing very little about what to expect. However, like most freshmen, I entered high school with my chin held high, wanting to interact with everyone. I felt like the king of the hill, strutting into the quad, seeing familiar faces from middle school, but that jubilant feeling ended rather quickly as the “senior tradition” flew over our heads.

Literally, flew over our heads.

As middle schoolers, the rumors of the senior tradition circled, each with a different theory. Well, in my first five minutes of being a high schooler, we figured out what the tradition truly was. On the north side of the quad, there was a staircase and a rather large balcony that led to the second level of the buildings that surrounded every edge of the rectangular quad. As all the freshmen gathered to mingle, we all witnessed a sea of seniors running up the stairs to the balcony carrying tin foil trays.

What could they be doing? Are they greeting us with a hot breakfast?

You could say that.

In a matter of seconds, hot dogs flew over our heads, smacking us in the face. Let’s be honest, everyone got hit, but you were lucky if your hot dog didn’t have any ketchup or mustard on it. Also, a Gatorade shower was given to “the smart ones” who decided to hide underneath the balcony. It was mayhem, but also one of the funniest experiences I have ever had. I don’t know if I can speak for all the freshmen, but this wasn’t something I griped about after; in fact, I embraced it.

I guess it’s true when they say high school is filled with new experiences and new opportunities.

High school is a time for fun, but all jokes aside, it’s a time to find your passion and new friends who will walk by your side through life’s journey.

It’s an incredible time that should never be taken for granted. Just leave the hot dogs at home.
